“Sticking Out Like a Sore Thumb”

Lisa:  Some of us care WAY too much about what other people think.  Well, let me tell you:  Giving birth to a child with Down Syndrome can cure this notion in one split second.  You either allow yourself to feel awkward about something your child said or did, or you decide to focus on what’s really important in life.  I no longer care if my child “sticks out like a sore thumb.”  Societal norms no longer rule my world.  When Sophie was born, the Farah Family hit our proverbial “reset button.”  Our once “normal,” dare I say boring life was forever changed when Sophie came along.

Last night was family move night in Pittsburgh at Nicole’s apartment.  We watched one of the most amazing movies I’ve ever seen:  “Wonder,”  which is about a boy with severe facial deformities and his difficult transition from homeschool to traditional school.   It was one of the most uplifting, at times painful, heartwarming, and inspirational films I’ve ever seen.  I honestly cried through the entire movie.  If you haven’t seen it, you should.  This was my favorite line of the whole film, and it describes Sophie to a tee:

“You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.”
